There's something about finding a cat in your squash garden that's just so wholesome. A wholesome harvest, if you will. The season is all about harvests and growth. The rich symbolism surrounding autumn makes this particular kitty's arrival feel almost too perfectly timed. A harvest is, after all, both an ending and a beginning. It's the culmination of months of growth, but it's also part of a cycle that will eventually begin again. The leaves change, gardens grow quiet, and nature reminds us that letting go and starting anew don't have to be opposites. Sometimes they're simply different parts of the same story. Perhaps that's why this little garden kitty feels like such a fitting autumn surprise.

Losing a beloved senior pet leaves behind a very particular kind of quiet. Years of routines suddenly disappear: the familiar footsteps, the feeding times, the favorite sleeping spots, the little presence that had become woven into everyday life. Welcoming another animal doesn't replace the one who came before them, nor should it. Every bond is its own thing. But grief and new love can exist beside each other. That's what makes the timing of this little squash-patch surprise so touching. While one chapter had recently ended for a neighbor mourning their senior cat, another tiny life had unexpectedly appeared nearby in need of somewhere to begin. I know that whenever I've been in a vast state of grief, there's always something beautiful and meaningful that comes out of it. If you're someone who doesn't believe in coincidences then you'll love this story.
